The Australian Standards Obsession – A Misguided Pride in the Construction Industry

In Australia’s construction industry, whether you're a professional, a client, or just an outsider looking in, there seems to be an almost universal sense of pride in Australian Standards. Hiring managers, HR personnel, and business owners often treat these standards as the gold standard of engineering and construction—sometimes to the point of exclusion.

If you’re a job seeker without an Australian degree or local experience, chances are you’ve heard the classic rejection line:

💬 “Sorry, you don’t have Australian qualifications or experience, so you’re not familiar with Australian Standards. We can’t consider you for this role.”

As a first-generation immigrant, I know this firsthand. I’ve faced rejection, discrimination, and isolation in the Australian job market simply because I didn’t fit their idea of a “local candidate.”

But here’s the irony: Those very rejections were what fueled my success today.

I took it upon myself to master Australian Standards, the National Construction Code (NCC), and industry guidelines—not just at a surface level, but with a depth that rivals and even surpasses many so-called “local experts.”

One of the most ironic things is that courses on the NCC (National Construction Code) and Australian Standards are shockingly rare in Australian universities—almost negligible! Eleven years ago, when I first arrived in Australia, I hit wall after wall in my job search, to the point of near despair. That’s when I started teaching myself the NCC and AS, approaching them with a sense of awe and humility. But as I flipped through the pages, I couldn’t help but wonder—are the NCC and AS, which employers and HR managers treat like the Bible, really the greatest and most advanced industrial standards in the world? Does that mean everything I learned in China suddenly counts for nothing in Australia? Does Newton’s three laws of motion, Maxwell’s equations, and other fundamental laws of physics somehow stop working in Australia? Does the molecular formula of water—H₂O—magically change here? And the result? Now I can confidently say: The NCC is nothing more than a joke of a “building constitution”—a loophole-ridden code that paves the way for dodgy practitioners to cut corners and cheat the system! Meanwhile, the AS plays the role of an accomplice, covering for the NCC while reinforcing a fortress of Aussie corporations!

And that’s why I feel compelled to share my thoughts—not for the first time, and certainly not for the last.

A Harsh Reality Check: Are Australian Standards Really That Superior?

Let’s be honest: Australian Standards and the NCC are outdated. They are not ahead of global standards but rather lagging behind. In reality, they are a patchwork of borrowed and copied regulations from the United States, the UK, the EU, and Japan.

Why? Because Australia lacks a truly advanced R&D system for construction standards. We don’t have the same level of cutting-edge research institutions, technical development programs, or dedicated code-writing bodies as other industrialized nations.

Instead, the standards development process in Australia is largely controlled by bureaucrats and corporate interests—a system designed to protect established players, generate profits, and maintain industry monopolies rather than foster real innovation.

Just take the forensic engineering industry I specialize in, for example. I have previously written about and criticized the fact that Australia, as a developed country, is the only one without dedicated forensic engineering codes. Beyond the technical aspect, even at the legal level, from federal to state and territory laws, there is no truly systematic legal framework or guidelines for forensic engineering. In contrast, countries like the United States, the UK, China, and Japan have well-established and practical forensic engineering standards, industry regulations, and legal frameworks.

I Know This Will Make Some People Uncomfortable

By now, I know exactly what’s coming.

📌 Some industry professionals, fiercely loyal to Australian Standards, will prepare to attack me. 📌 Some will resort to personal insults rather than engaging in a technical debate. 📌 Some will take offense simply because I’ve touched on an inconvenient truth.

And that’s fine.

But real progress comes from questioning, challenging, and improving—not from blindly following outdated norms.

So, here’s my question to the Australian construction industry: Are we truly leading the world in engineering and construction standards, or are we just clinging to an illusion of superiority?

I welcome discussion, debate, and yes—even criticism. Because at the end of the day, innovation doesn’t come from comfort zones.

Let’s start talking about real improvements, not just outdated pride.
