PostStructural engineering & steel construction

How do you splice a heavy-duty steel lattice column at height?

Aligning and joining the upper and lower sections of a steel lattice column.

This clip shows the erection crew aligning and joining the upper and lower sections of a lattice column.

Lattice columns are used in large industrial facilities and some bridge structures. The same structural principle is widely used in high-voltage transmission towers. By spacing the main steel members apart and connecting them with horizontal and diagonal members, engineers can form a deep structural section suited to substantial loads and heights.

The lift is only part of the job. At this stage, alignment, the splice connection and temporary stability all need careful control before the lifting equipment is released.

It is a good reminder that a connection designed on a drawing must also be practical to assemble safely at height.
