Removing rust with lasers.
Steel surface preparation commonly uses hand tools, power tools, abrasive blasting or chemical treatments. Laser cleaning adds another option: using laser energy to remove rust and surface contaminants.
Its main advantages include:
- Precision—targeting selected areas with controlled, repeatable cleaning.
- Non-contact treatment—reducing mechanical wear on the steel.
- Fewer consumables—no added blasting media or chemical cleaning agents, reducing secondary waste.
- Selective removal—with suitable settings, removing corrosion while limiting damage to the underlying material.
For steel maintenance, these benefits make laser cleaning worth considering, particularly for localised corrosion and detailed components.
However, a visibly clean surface is not automatically ready for painting. The specified cleanliness and surface profile must still be achieved. Performance depends on the equipment, settings and corrosion condition; laser safety controls and effective fume extraction remain essential.
A useful addition to the maintenance toolbox—selected to suit the steelwork, coating system and project requirements.
