New York’s Pfizer Building: Has the Repair Succeeded?
Since July’s structural failure at New York’s former Pfizer headquarters made international headlines, I have been following the case closely. As a forensic structural engineer, I am naturally interested in how the damaged structure is stabilised and repaired.
A few days ago, I saw the latest repair update from the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB). This prompted us at North Star Design & Build to prepare this video specifically for professional discussion and public education.
The video explores the engineering behind the repair: temporary shoring, replacement of damaged steel, controlled hydraulic jacking, and transfer of load back into the repaired columns. It also follows those loads through the supporting structure to the foundations.
With only limited photographs, footage and drawings publicly available, parts of the reconstruction necessarily rely on engineering judgement and established practice for similar high-rise structural repairs.
I welcome technical observations and discussion from fellow engineers and construction professionals.
