Using Overseas Structural Steelwork in Australia — A Practical Compliance Roadmap

【Using Overseas Structural Steelwork in Australia — A Practical Compliance Roadmap】
Overseas structural steelwork can offer real cost advantages. But how do you demonstrate that it meets Australian requirements—and give the project team confidence to accept it?
Over the past ten years, our team has helped Australian clients work through precisely this challenge. That experience has shaped the practical compliance framework we use at North Star Design & Build—from verifying the steel itself and how it is fabricated, to establishing the evidence needed for acceptance on a particular project.
The framework centres on three simple questions:
- What is it made of?
- How was it made?
- Can we use it on this project?
Each question requires clear evidence, linked to the actual steelwork supplied. One principle underpins the entire process:
- Qualification may be reused; project acceptance must be made for each project.
I regularly receive enquiries on LinkedIn from Australian developers, building surveyors and certifiers, engineers, architects, builders and steelwork suppliers seeking practical guidance on this process.
I have always been happy to share what we have learned—including the pitfalls, not just the successes—to help others make informed decisions and avoid repeating costly mistakes.
There is a Chinese saying: “The hand that gives roses retains their fragrance.” It captures why I believe practical knowledge is worth sharing.
The roadmap below brings our experience together in a clear, practical form. I hope it helps you understand and navigate the technical compliance process for bringing overseas structural steelwork into Australian projects.

This post focuses solely on technical compliance. Political and broader socioeconomic issues are outside its scope.
